“Swa hlamarisa” is a drama book by Tsonga writer and academic Dr. Tiyiselani Ndukwani. In this book Dr. Ndukwani delves into many subjects and tells stories in unique and unusual ways. This story is about his journey of life. Through this story, he explained how he grew up, the challenges he faced and how he ended up being a doctor of philosophy. The writer came from a very poor family, both parents were not working. The situation became worse when he pass grade 12. His parents did not have money to send him to tertiary and his peers and classmates were laughing at him and bragging because they came from better families. The help came from his neighbour who was a teacher, who advised him to go to TUT with a group of students who were leaving the following day.
His journey was not easy. He struggled to get admitted since he did not apply during the year. It took him about a month to get a course. He also struggled about the place to live since his parents could not afford to pay for his accommodation. He had no choice than to just sleep in an open area (soccer ground). He slept there for about a week until he got a room on campus. He then started attending classes and get a bursary.
He started working very hard and pass all his modules with distinctions. His Diploma was also a cum laude and people started noticing him. He later became a lecturer and started supporting his family which was very poor. Later, he furthered his studies to do B-Tech, Masters and PhD. After completing his PhD, he started to help the community, going to schools to motivate learners, donating school uniforms and helping students who are struggling to go to tertiary.
